MYM picked the Volunteers of America Adopt-A-Family program as its community project for this month and were able to contribute $400 towards the project. After receiving wish lists from five needy Muslim families, the MYM went shopping for the items. The youth distributed the items to the families on Eid as gifts from the community. Gifts included winter coats, boots, gloves, clothing, and books. Adopt a Family is an annual drive to provide holiday gifts and a meal to needy families and individuals who are participants of Volunteers of America of Minnesota programs. The project benefits low-income older adults, families, at-risk youth attending alternative schools, youth receiving mental health services, foster children and persons with special needs. Three members of the MYM Executive Board (Sameena Ahmed, Josh Anwar, and Zubair Saiyed) and one MYM general member (Salwa Drake) were interviewed by MPR for a segment on challenges facing Muslim youth in public schools and how they are seen as the ambassadors of Islam. For the fourth year, MYM youth made Eid goodie bags and distributed them to children at Eid prayers. Over 1400 kids received goodie bags this year. This project was inspired by MYM youth who wanted to make Eid special for kids in our community. It has, with the blessing of God, become an Eid highlight for some area kids. More Details |
