Muslim Youth of Minnesota

Abia Isse Ali, a volunteer with the Muslim Youth of MN and the Abu Bakr Islamic Center Girls Youth Program, has won the 2007 Teresa S. Ruhland Youth Award. The Minneapolis Police presents this award each year to recognize a Minneapolis resident who has done an outstanding job of involving young people in community activities. The award is named after Teresa Ruhland, a longtime, visionary employee of the Community Crime Prevention/SAFE unit of the Minneapolis Police Department who died unexpectedly in 2000.

As the award winner, Abia received an engraved award trophy and a $250 gift card. Her name has also been added to a plaque in the Ruhland Community Room at the Third Police Precinct.

Chief of Police Tim Dolan presented Abia with the 2007 Ruhland Award at a special ceremony on Wednesday, February 20. More Details

Sr. Abia has been volunteering with the MYM summer camp since it first started five years ago. She mash’Allah is very committed to youth activities and is very deserving of this award.

MYM 10th Year Anniversary

The Muslim Youth of MN (MYM), with the blessing of God Almighty, celebrated 10 years of leadership, service and inspiration to the youth in our community on February 9th with a dinner hosted by the youth.

Realizing the social challenges that Muslim youth face in today’s society, MYM has focused on providing fun, permissible alternatives to activities that don’t correspond to our faith. In addition to social, recreation and sporting events, MYM has provided youth in Minnesota with unconventional educational opportunities, service and leadership experience, college scholarships, mentorship, and community outreach opportunities. MYM members consist of Muslim teenagers, ages 13-17, from various backgrounds and from across the state.
